Complex Property Division: Who Owns What?
California is a community property state, which means that any assets acquired during the course of the marriage are considered to be owned equally by both spouses. Conflicts frequently arise over whether any given business or any given business asset can be considered "community property."
For example, what happens if one spouse starts a business before the marriage, but that business increases in value during the marriage?
